Living in the English speaking world, I often have to explain how to say my last name. Actually it's a fairly common name, and it's not as hard to say as it looks. Unlike in English, the Serbo-Croatian alphabet has a letter for every sound, and everything is written the way it's said. There are additional letters for some sounds, and some "letters" are actually two put together. One of them is "LJ", and it sounds roughly like the "li" in battalion. Or just forgeddabout the J after the L to read:
